COUNTY CORRECTION SERGEANT
DEFINITION
Under direction during an assigned tour of duty, supervises a
squad of officers, reviews their work performance, and assists
them with the more difficult assignments or inmates; does other
related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Performs supervisory and other assigned duties in accord with
established policies, regulations, and procedures to encourage
and assist the rehabilitation of those persons deprived of their
liberty.
Attends classes for instruction in principles, practices, and
terminology of correctional and penological methods.
During an assigned tour of duty, supervises a squad of officers
and gives them assignments and instructions.
In addition to correctional work, may be assigned to supervise a
squad of officers directing a group of inmates in performance of
work such as farming, cooking, or maintenance.
Prepares reports.
Maintains records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of experience in work involving the custody or
protection of individuals.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New
Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the
position.
CITIZENSHIP
Must be a citizen of the United States.
NOTE: MEDICAL EXAMINATION
As a prerequisite for appointment, appointees may be
required to pass a thorough medical examination administered by
the appointing authority. Any medical or physical condition or
defect which would prevent efficient performance of duties of the
position, cause appointee to be a hazard to himself/herself or
others, or become aggravated as a result of performance of these
duties, will be cause for rejection. Appointees may be required
to undergo a psychiatric examination prior to appointment.
Failure to demonstrate sufficient capacity to perform duties of
this position may be cause for rejection.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of problems likely to be encountered in work involving
rehabilitation, care, and custody of persons deprived of their
liberty.
Ability to give assignments and instruction to assigned officers.
Ability to understand some of the emotional adjustment and other
problems of inmates deprived of their liberty.
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to maintain records.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
